LEGO Worlds "How to give a horse an apple?" or "I haven't played in way too long."

This topic is pretty inconsequential. Just wondering: so I just built a new computer, really wanted to try out this game so it would actually be able to render more than a few meters in front of me. Everything  works great, I can't wait to get into it again. I was just wondering -- I guess you can't just ride horses anymore, you have to give them apples first? I found an apple, but it won't eat it; I try to give it to the horse and I just smash it in the face with it. My brother theorized that because I had a "Dark Green Apple" and the apple in the thought bubble looked admittedly light-green, I must have the wrong apple. Is this correct? If not, what am I to do? Poor horses keep running away after I punch them in the head.

There's different apple colors and trees for those different colors. I've seen green, dark green, and red, IIRC. So, find a normal green apple tree.
