Drome Racers Version Differences

Recently Xiron >brought to my attention the presence of another verison of Drome Racers for PC. As it turns out, there are at least two different copies of Drome Racers. The EXE, GTC, and INF files are all minorly different between the two version.
 
The Short Overview
 
Older, DRM

  • Safedisc V2.80.010 DRM
  • Built on 11-06-02
  • Has a splash screen during CD verification.

New, No DRM

  • No DRM
  • Build on 11-22-02
  • Has an opening language select screen.

How do you tell which version you have? If you can't play without the CD or have this splash screen, you have the Older, DRM version. You can also check the file date modified.

After extraction the GTC, most of the files are mostly the same.

It seems that almost all of the .PC TEXTURE files were re-encoded, as most of them differ by a small percentage of bytes. The list of different .PC TEXTURE file is too large to post and not very usefull, so here is a list of .PC TEXTURE files that are NOT different.

I don't believe that the textures are actually different, but we won't know for certain until a converter is written.

There are also a few files that are only in the Newer, No DRM version. These files are.

The Newer, No DRM version uses 0x0A line endians, but the Older, DRM version uses 0x0D0A.
 

 

Credits
And finally, the TEXT/CREDITS *.CMU files are all different between versions. This is because the Electronic Arts section of the credits was removed in the Newer, No DRM version. Here is the English version of the removed section.

This means that later EA was removed from the credits. I have no idea why, but it might be an interesting story.

A friend of mine IRL had a disc with no DRM, which I think I still have installed on an old laptop - I'll check it out whenever I get around to using that old thing again. The disc I own myself has DRM, the EXE is indeed dated 11/6/2002.

I never even knew there was a DRM version, the only copies I have ever owned where all DRM free xD. I also recall a friend having a brickmaster (I think that is what the are called) version which as I'm sure you know is just the normal game without a box and a digital version of the manual

hmm, the screenshot above seems vaguely familiar to me so I think I have the DRM version, but I also remember the language selection screen rather well.
In addition, this is one of the games I have not yet finished completely... I'll look into this tomorrow.
 

EDIT: Ok, I checked: My version seems to be different from the two above. It does have DRM and language selection (where I can choose german or italian) and most of the files are dated 11-11-02.

Where exactly is the path for those newer files in the non-drm newer version, on the CD or in Program Files?

Could you share a more complete path perhaps so I could tell which one I have? (I'm having issues running it on Windows 10, so, I can't really tell unless I see whether I have those unique files or not. See my other thread http://www.rockraidersunited.com/topic/6558-cant-run-drome-racers-win10 on this if you wish.

I don't have a graphics folder at all on the CD or in Program Files but I also can not find the credits file.

 

Could you guys please post some more exact file paths to these?
