Seems to be from fairly late in development, as it heavily resembles the final game, but there are some rather interesting differences. PeabodySam told me he saw this video years ago on an old disc... Now we can finally see it again. :D

I can't really see anything very different. Then again, it's been a good year since I played this game.

And now I miss LEGO Island 2. :/ Too bad I still can't unlock the Adverturer's plane minigame.

Perhaps you can state these interesting differences? I've never pulled myself to play LI2, so I have no idea what changes were made.

Here's the differences I picked out:

  • The GUI is almost always different in some way.
  • Buildings don't rebuild themselves, instead, they spin around and poof into existence like in the PS1 game.
  • No water wave effects or tilting on the Res-Q boat while moving, speed seems slightly faster but maybe not.
  • Bricks in Brick Dive are blue until picked up, then they turn red. In the final game, they're always red.
  • Those fish don't seem to be moving.
  • What on earth is happening at 1:10?
  • The mummy's tomb is darker.
  • Pepper runs insanely fast once the boulder starts chasing him, leaving it far behind.
  • Kilroy's speedster is green.
  • Rock Monsters are light grey instead of brown.
  • The sky is black in Fishing.
  • Isn't the centrifuge area slightly different in the final game?
  • As noted before, the GUI is almost always different, but one difference that stands out is that Cedric's head is on the health meter in the Asteroid Belt. ("Fire all weapons, dispatch the fish ship to bring back his body!")
  • Visual differences in Asteroid Belt itself.
  • The landing platforms on Ogel have images of Earth on them.

Isn't the centrifuge area slightly different in the final game?

You're right, it is. It's hard to describe, but it seems... smaller in this game. And the walls are more "flat". Less detailed is the phrase I'm looking for I guess.

To add to the list...the fish are blue instead of red, the skeleton with the crown has a golden crown in the actual game.

The differences are almost entirely cosmetic.

Interesting. The lighting and camera placement in Whack-A-Snake seem much better here than in the final game; you can actually make out the hieroglyphs behind Pepper, and the winged disk design above is fully visible. I wonder why that was changed? I can imagine there may have been difficulties differentiating between the top and bottom snake baskets.

A few more things:

- It is hard to tell without seeing up close, but it appears as if King Leo's Castle might be the more set-accurate version seen in the PS1 edition of the game, as opposed to the version with stone-like textures in the final PC version. I had previously thought that the set-like design had been an improvement that the developers threw into the PS1 version while they were working on it (much like the larger tents by the jousting area), but if I am seeing correctly than it was apparently the stonework that was thought to be an improvement, and the PS1 version was simply left out. Also, the hill beside the castle at 1:20 appears to have less trees than in the final game.

- Pepper's visor in the centrifuge mini game bears more resemblance to a standard visor than the larger one in the final game.

- The clam in the diving mini game opens and closes at a much faster pace.

I decided I would note the differences in this video compared to the Lego Island we all own and have. 1) apparently houses/buildings grow or shrink while spinning around. a reference to the PS1 version. 2) When driving a boat there is no water particles rushing out from the sides. 3) The bricks in the scuba diving mission are blue but turn red when you pick them up. 4) The clam's delay in the diving mission is shortened but could've possibly been made longer for the player to actually get out.

5) In the castle world there are knights on the bridge after it is repaired. 6) In the mummy's tomb there is a black fog inside. 7) At the area in the mummie's tomb where the constructopedia page is there are columns surrounding it. 8) because of the black fog the boulder cannot be seen. 9) In the desert car dash (I think that is what its called) mission the car is green, not red.

10) In the desert world the image for the diamonds are a different picture. 11) In the bi-plane mission there is a turquoise fog. 12) The Mr Hates camp mission has a white fog. 13) In the fishing mission there is no sky. 14) In the fishing mission there is some sort of speedometer in the bottom left. 15) In the spaceship training (I forgotten what it is called) the ground is not grey, instead it is tan.

16) In the asteroid field mission the sky is lighter, making the asteroids more easier to spot. 17) The rocket ship controls in the asteroid field game is simplified. 18) In the asteroid field mission the rocket goes faster than in the finale version of the game. 19) In the space parachute the 'parachute' is completely black. 20) The targets in both parachute missions don't flash or are not animated.

21) Is anyone still reading this?

I decided I would note the differences in this video compared to the Lego Island we all own and have.

Perhaps if you had read the other replies here you would have noticed that most of what you just said was already posted, and you also missed quite a lot. And not everybody here has the game like you state, le717 just said here that he's never played it... Seriously, read a topic before replying to it next time, please, thanks.

6) In the mummy's tomb there is a black fog inside.

There's black fog in the final tomb as well, but it fades in at a farther distance.

8) because of the black fog the boulder cannot be seen.

Or perhaps it's due to the fact that Pepper suddenly gains the ability to outrun Sonic the Hedgehog and leaves it far behind...

9) In the desert car dash (I think that is what its called) mission the car is green, not red.

Desert Speedster.

11) In the bi-plane mission there is a turquoise fog. 12)

As there is in the final game...

14) In the fishing mission there is some sort of speedometer in the bottom left.

20) The targets in both parachute missions don't flash or are not animated.

You might want to re-watch the video, the targets in the first parachuting minigame are animated, and the targets in the second game have different textures entirely.

21) Is anyone still reading this?

No. :P

[sarcasm]Gee. Thanks for the help![/sarcasm]

I would complete the game if the load times were faster.

Perhaps it has something to do with how the video was made, but isn't the whole game more yellowish? Especially in the desert everything seems to coalesce. Also, in the jousting, there is some kind of text-like score counter in the top of the screen. In the final game, I remember this being more GUI-ish with Pepper's and the Black Knights' heads.

  • 3 years later...

The YouTube account that had this video uploaded was terminated quite a while back, and as far as I've seen there's currently no other uploads of it. @PeabodySam once said he saw it on a demo disc (as mentioned in the OP), I don't suppose anyone here might have it?

"I've got good news, and I've got better news!  Which would you like to hear first?"

Like Terrev mentioned, I've had this LEGO Island 2 rolling demo CD for years.  I also haven't seen it in that same number of years.  But lo and behold, when I went looking for it this morning, I somehow found it in the very first place I looked!

Because it's apparently so rare that there's no documentation of it on the internet, I decided to take plenty of pictures and screenshots for posterity's sake.  Therefore, this post will be image-heavy, but I'll spare people scrolling through this topic by stuffing the images into spoiler tags.

Photographs of the CD and the sleeve it came in:

I've elected to only show the game in English from here on out.

Clicking the X at the bottom right corner of the screen at any time will exit the demo, showing this screen before quitting to desktop.

The "Intro Movie" trailer is the same thing we've seen before: the intro movie with "Make-A-D-Pizza" and "LEGO Island" music instead of what is heard in the final product.

And now, for what you were waiting for: the reuploaded "Game-play Footage" trailer!

A few more interesting tidbits:

  • The video files have December 15, 2000 (Intro Movie) and December 20, 2000 (Game-play Footage) as the "Date modified".
  • The folders and DXR files on the CD have January 15, 2001 as the "Date modified".  This is the latest date that appears in any of the CD's files.

YESSSS. So good to see this again, thank you!

... Did the player just land the pterodactyl in a random place in the clip at 2:36? And there's no landing pad near the gas station like there is in the final game, either... Were you originally able to land flying vehicles/creatures anywhere...? I can see how that'd lead to plenty of bugs with landing in awkward places, but dang, the landing pads were one of my main gripes when playing the game as a kid, haha.

Edit: The helipad at the jail is also not there in this footage, here's a comparison with the model from the final game:

And a comparison with the clip featuring the pterodactyl:

So yeah, I'm pretty sure landing pads were a fairly late addition to the game... Heh, it's the opposite of the first game, where the helipad texture was removed and we've only seen it in beta screenshots (and the game intro):

Oh! Also interesting to see how the sky in Castle Island changed from this beta video to the final game, getting less dark - the same change happened on PS1, see the end of this post:

So I'm looking through an old hard drive and

wz7Kyl1.png

apparently I had a download of the original upload all along?

not only on an ooold hard drive I couldn't find cords for but in a completely random folder on said hard drive?

and I've just rediscovered it now of all times
