Installer Not Working? You Can Salvage Your Game.

A common problem with this game is that the game's installer will not run on newer systems. You may be able to get it to run by trying compatibility modes, ending programs or disabling UAC. However if all these efforts fail there is something you can do to save your game and be able to play it.

Step 1

Download a program called 'Universal Extractor'. It has been uploaded here for your convenience. Then extract the contents of the zip file you've downloaded.

Step 2

Insert your LEGO Rock Raiders disc and open the contents of the disc. Specifically you are looking for a file named 'data.cab'

Step 3

Start up Universal extractor, browse and select the 'data.cab' file on your disc as the archive to extract. Set the destination directory to wherever you want the game.

Step 4

Click 'ok' and wait until it has finished extracting.

Step 5

In the disc you will see a folder named 'EXE'. Inside is an exe and icd file, copy these.

Step 6

In the location you extracted the 'data.cab' paste those copied files and click 'yes' to overwriting. The reason for this is because the exe within the 'data.cab' file is for 16bit systems whereas the one in the 'EXE' folder is compatible with 32bit and 64bit systems.

And that is all. You've manually installed the game and saved it. You can run the game by executing LegoRR.exe from the directory you've extracted everything. Note that this method can be used with many other games with which you are having the same issue. Additionally, if you feel inclined, you can make a new installer with programs such as InnoSetup.

You forgot to extract the extractor :P

Btw, thanks Cyrem for posting this. It works well. I just have two questions.

1) Is there a way for the videos/music to work when it's on the hard drive

2) If I wanted to apply Baz's Mod, how would I go about doing it?

Put the avi's in the Data/AVI folder.

I forget how Baz's mod locates an LRR install, but if it only wants to patch the properly installed version, you may be able to extract the wads from the exe and just replace them yourself.

the size is 125 Mb

And I can't find who published it. I can only find that it has been made at 28-8-2003 at 10:38

1) is there any way to run the game in a larger resolution? Whenever i run it full screen it cuts of the sides, and when it's windowed it's really small.

2) None of the cutscenes play.

Help?

2) None of the cutscenes play.

1 is impossible (without some major flaws), so for #2 can you go HERE and look through every topic to see if you can find a solution? If nothing works, create a new topic.

Thank you for the tutorial, however I seem to have encountered the issue of my game crashing during the loading screen. I followed the instructions to the best of my abilities, and inserted d3drm.dll into the extracted folder. Any idea of what the issue may be?

-Edit

I'm sorry this post out of place, and I can't find the delete button. Sorry.

I works!!

But the language is norwegian or something, how do I change the language to Danish?

The sound/speak is in danish, but all the text in the game is norwegian. Weird

That's weird. You're going to need to mod the game, I think. Get a WAD Extractor from the uploads section and extract WAD LegoRR1.wad.

Same problem here, this is a screenshot of my disk's content:

LRR%20CD%20content_361058.PNG

Note: The EXE folder has a LegoRR.exe in it that has been created an hour later than the one that is installed on the PC by default but neither of them work. The data1.cab can be extracted by the tool you posted above but it does not contain any folder named EXE but only the same LegoRR.exe as the one mentioned above.

I also tried Win7's XP Mode but it does not work because "No DirectX 3D accelerator could be found."

D:

Can you take a picture of the disc itself and figure out what date it was produced (usually either 1999 or 2001)? Also, what country was it purchased in and what companies are on the disc or the box, apart from LEGO?

I could provide you with pictures but they won't be of any use since the whole text on it is in german, so I'll just write about what you asked for here:
On the disk (which is completely in brown with black text) Electronic Arts is mentioned as a co-publisher and distributor. The disk does not give any clue on when it has been made, except maybe for the copyright on the border that says "© 1999-2002 The Lego Group." and the (small) manual that came with the disk does not show any date as well. The only thing I know is that I got the disk in 2004 or 2005. Also, the CD is an "approved special edition".
Unfortunately the original box is lost either somewhere in the basement or in the past or (quite likely) both.

EDIT: One more clue found, the german manual on the disk is from the 28th of october 2002. There is also a french manual there from the 9th of september 2002.

Hmm, a 2002 re-release? This is making my head spin...

Can you enter the following code into CMD and run it please?

dir [Enter your disc drive letter here]: /S >> C:Users[Enter your Username Here]Desktoplog.txt

Replace the stuff in brackets and run it in CMD. It should create a document on the desktop called "log.txt". Please paste the contents here.

I have a feeling, although it's completely empty on the disc, that your ICD file might be to blame. If you can install the game properly, can you tell us the size of LegoRR.icd in your Program Files folder?

Installing works perfectly fine. Actually, it does even (almost) start, but when the screen resolution is changed, nothing happens for ages and the process is idle in the background.
The .icd file in the game's folder is 0 Bytes in size. :/
I'll search my old HDDs, maybe there's still a working version around somewhere.
