  • Run LEGO Rock Raiders with dgVoodoo

This guide is more or less a re-write of many posts of this method that are scattered around the forum with updated links and pictures to make it easier to follow.

First and foremost there is sometimes confusion between dgVoodoo and Cafeteria. These are significantly different and perform entirely different things. dgVoodoo is an graphics API wrapper (or “converter”) for DirectDraw & Direct3D (Part of DirectX 6 - a graphics API developed by Microsoft). Most modern graphics cards are not compatible with games utilising old versions of DirectX, Rock Raiders is one of them. Cafeteria on the other hand is a Mod Launcher that allows easy installation of game resource modifications for LEGO Rock Raiders. It also has the ability to force LEGO Rock Raiders to run in resolutions higher than 640x480. You can use both of these together for optimal graphics improvements. in summary - dgVoodoo is what makes it possible to run LEGO Rock Raiders on modern graphics cards, not Cafeteria. Cafeteria is merely a toolkit to make an already working game even better.

Secondly, Microsoft has updated Windows Vista through to Windows 10 with patches that remove SafeDisc and SecureRom support from those systems. This is a problem if you own a copy of LEGO Rock Raiders that is copy-protected. If you own the copy-protected version of LEGO Rock Raiders (some of the re-releases did not have copy protection) you'll probably find the game will not run at all. Following this guide will also correct this issue as well.

Now that we know what dgVoodoo is and we know about the SafeDisc issue, lets begin.

    Guide
While setting this up is really a piece of cake and requires barely any steps, people still can still get it wrong, so please follow the steps below. If you get stuck, try it again. If you're still stuck, reply to this topic.

    PREPARATION
Before you begin, you will need to download some files. Please note that some Antivirus software may complain that dgVoodoo contains a virus. This is a false positive, it is a clean file. Download the files in the list below.

    1. LRR Masterpiece Editon Executable - Download
    2. D3DRM - Download
    3. dgVoodoo 2.55.4 - Download
Note: dgVoodoo 2.53 is also compatible with LEGO Rock Raiders, download this version if you have issues with the latest version above.

    STEP 1
If you haven't already, install LEGO Rock Raiders. If the installer isn't working, try the Alternative Installer. Once this is done, navigate to the Rock Raider's installation directory (usually its: C:\Program Files (x86)\LEGO Media\Games\Rock Raiders ) and extract the contents of the "LRR Masterpiece Edition" zip file you downloaded just earlier into your installation folder, overwriting the original files. This folder then should look similar to this:

    mWEq-ElkS4ivLXZxlNvoMw.png

    STEP 3
Next, from the D3DRM archive you downloaded before extract the D3DRM DLL File into the install folder.

    large.d3drmmove.gif.b097912a5d1811a1b8fa

After that, open the dgVoodoo archive you also downloaded. You will need to extract: dgVoodooCpl.exe and the contents of the MS folder into your installation directory.

    large.dvvoodoomove.gif.f2631837882e8bb8c

    STEP 4
You're almost done. We'll now configure dgVoodoo, so double click dgVoodooCpl.exe to start the configuration program. Ensure that you are running the program in Administrator Mode (Right Click > Run as Administrator) or changes may not be saved. When it starts, look at the "Config Folder" path, if it is not the same path as your Rock Raiders install folder, click the ".\" button on the right. Next click the "DirectX" tab. You may want to play with some settings in here, however for this guide we'll just do the important ones. Change the "Resolution" to the same resolution that you are currently using (e.g 1920 x 1080 is common) and uncheck the "dgVoodoo Watermark".  Finally click apply.

    large.dvvoodoocfg.gif.32944670e2f6d7d271

    STEP 5
Congratulations, you're set! There's one thing left to do and it's very important. You need to start the game from LegoRR.exe. Afterwards a window will appear, and if you've set it up correctly it will display the driver as "dgVoodoo DirectX Wrapper (display)".

    large.runrr.gif.bc515f291457be8e4c993f72

    STEP 6 (OPTIONAL)
While the game will now run, you will notice an absence of music. Typically, Rock Raiders plays music from the disc. However I have a fix to restore the game music into the game without the disc. If you would like to do this, follow this short guide.

I hope this guide has helped you get your copy of LEGO Rock Raiders to work. Be sure to reply below if it worked for you or if you're having any troubles. Don't forget that if you do get it running, check out some of the great mods for the game around the community.

hello @Cyrem , i appear to be having the same problem as the above user ( @Mcasitalia). i have downloaded all of your suggested files and i have downloaded the game files from <site link removed>. i cant even install the game as my laptop has no disk tray and after following your above suggestion for downloading the universal extractor i cant extract any of the files. i have tried running the program on every file in the folder just as a test, when running it on the universal extractor archive file, it just tells me the below:

Error: The CD-ROM image could not be converted. if this is a BIN/CUE image, ensure that the CUE file is properly formatted.

it then gives me a second pop up saying the CUE file is supported but extraction failed with the below error:

Feb 22 2005, 13:56:33
bin2iso V1.95 - Converts raw formatted (.BIN) files to .ISO/.WAV format
               Bob Doiron
               Joonas Loppi
Check for updates at <link>
Unable to open C:\Program Files (x86)\Lego Rock Raiders\ROCKRAIDERS_uniextract.cue

I simply adored this game as a Kid and any help you can provide on getting this running would be greatly appreciated. any advice?

Hey Ryan,

The universal extractor was for extracting the CAB files (they would be inside BIN file). However, as you have a disc image, have you tried mounting it to a virtual disc drive? If you don't have a tool to do this, WinCDEmu is a popular choice: https://wincdemu.sysprogs.org/ .

Once mounted, it will be as if you have a disc inserted, and the Installer mentioned in this guide should work.

Hope that helps.

I followed the guide and it does *technically* work but now i have some game breaking errors.

  • the first issue is that everything at the start is white. the first logo is a giant white blot, the loading screen is white with some of the lego characters outlines in black. the menu is all completely white (i had to google a picture of the main menu to see roughly where i should be clicking.)
  • the lego d00des are all black, instead of the cool miner textures.
  • the result screen shares the same "white-out" problem that my earlier screens show, EXCEPT for the different results sections i.e. the crystal in the corner showing the % of crystals found, the lady showing your time, the amount of ore you collected in the mission etc
  • lastly as you click in the results screen to show the next category, ultimately for the dude to show the clipboard to show your overall rating and (i'm assuming) allowing you to save your progress and continue to the next mission; yeah it CTD every single time

so yeah, the game itself runs smoothly and fine, sadly, because of the ultimate CTD issue i have, im stuck playing only the first level. anyone have any ideas how to help me?

Ok I seem to have the same issue as you, on Win 10 64 bit, Radeon RX 580, latest dgvoodoo (previus version wasn´t working at all)

I did not try to finish the mission though, but the white-out problem is the same, lego dudes being black and so on. But the game has full speed without lag.

I was about to give up but I managed to play  it without the weird white black errors, game is now running flawlesly, it saves, and plays at full speed, I still cannot believe it I managed it on win 10 with AMD. I already wanted to buy some old Thinkpad laptop with Win XP so I could play this game again.... the prices of these things are suprisingly low.

To fix this, I had to change one thing in the dgvoodoo - Output API in General tab - change it to "Direct3d 11 (feature level 10.0)" and voila, suddenly it worked without trouble. DONT leave it at "best available".

This will probably not help you much, but reinstall from scratch, follow this guide to the letter (BUT MAKE SURE TO INSTALL THE LATEST dgvoodoo 2.62), and then, always change one thing in the dgVoodoo, try to run it, if it does not work try again changing another setting, and again run it... It took me whole week but there are so many specifics that can work on different machines.  And don´t forget the D3D9.dll, it may not make a difference but try every possible fix one by one, there are many fixes described on the forum.

ok! so your specific option did not fix graphical issues, BUT it did make it saveable at result screen instead of instant CTD, however, on the same API output options I chose DIRECT3D 11 MS WARP (software) and graphically it runs perfect. thank you so much for showing me the right direction!!! GUUYYSSS IM GONNA SPEND SO MUCH TIME DRILLING <333

Here the Facts:

Using the 1999 Version of the Game (in German)

+ dgvoodoo 2.62

+ the settings mentioned by K1ll3rm4n

While it runs smoothly the only problem i have here is that the Videoclips aren't working despite being present in the Data/AVI Folder.

Any idea how to fix that?
