Let's Make a Game

"Oh no, not another one of these topics". Before you make any presumptions about this topic, I want to make two things abundantly clear:

1) Forget the stigma. The justice system generally works as "innocent until proven guilty", not "guilty until proven innocent". Unfortunately there seems to be a mentality around RRU that any large project will not be completed, and while this is quite often true, approaching this particular topic with such a pessimistic view isn't going to do any favours. See this topic as innocent until proven guilty, a.k.a. destined to succeed until proven a failure.

2) Let me define "game". When I say game here, I'm talking at its most basic technicality, let's make a game featuring a character who can move and jump, maybe swing a sword too. Let's not even consider making more than one level, in fact let's not consider making a fully-functioning first level. When I say "game", I mean let's produce a bare-bones interactive project we can be proud of. Forget your AAA games, forget even your Indie games. I'm thinking of a toddler's drawing in comparison to a Da Vinci masterpiece.

Alright, with that out of the way, I have a proposal for RRU. Let's make a small game together! Let's make a little character who can move and jump, and if we get far enough, maybe even have them able to attack or interact with an environmental object. To reiterate above, I'm talking about the basic mechanics of a game, don't think about anything beyond a character and small environment. Interested? We'd need a few different roles to be filled:

Designer

Someone to decide what the game will do. Will it be a top-down game where a square floats around a tiled board? Or a front-on side-scrolling platformer where a character jumps about?

Programmer - JimbobJeffers

I'll happily fill this role. This person will program the mechanics of the game, making the character actually do what the designer wants. For those interested, I'd be working in Flash as I'm very familiar with it and have programmed several different types of games in the past.

Artist - AokpiszBen24x7, MaelstromIslander, rioforce

The artist will design the visuals of the game. They'd draw the character, or the square, but they probably wouldn't animate it. They'd also draw the environment.

Animator - Ben24x7MaelstromIslander

Animates the character and anything else that moves. This person breathes life into the artist's work.

Musician - Drill MasterShadowblaze

Some music in the background to complement the game, no matter how small it may be, would be great to liven it up.

SFX - JimbobJeffers, rioforceXiron

The audial feedback for the player, while not necessary, definitely makes the experience much more engaging.

Would anyone be interested in this project?

I'm not sure what I'd fill, as I don't want any position too demanding of time. I guess I can cover sfx, I have 35,000 of those laying around my hard drive after all, and modding sfx is something I do to a lot of games even if I may not mod anything else in said game.

Sounds interesting. I know I'm new, but I've been interested in making games for long time (anyone remember those post-LEGO Universe games?). I can always help with art, a bit of animation, and sound effects. I too have an extensive library of sound effects.

I can do some animation should you wish.

Also, if the game gets abstract visuals, or Lego if you want to go as far, count me in as an Artist.

...and another thing; I am no musician, but I could mention music that seems like it's... ..."feel" would fit the game/moment, and that could be used as the basis of... ...actually, never mind that...

RRU The Game? I'd like that. :P

You know which position I'll fill ;)

Music, awesome! Thanks DM.

-snip-

That's actually quite along the lines of what I'm proposing, if a little more primitive. ;)

SFX would be pretty cool, thanks Xiron!

Another exclamation mark - animation would be brilliant! Don't worry about music if JAL is making some. :)

count me in as an Artist.

You can make 3D models?

I'm proposing a 2D game to start off simple, don't worry about that.

Now it's time to set up the game design, if no one wants to be the designer?

2D

Where do i sign? :P

Will it be primitive as in 8-bit/16-bit or will it be normal? And will it be 2.5D or just plain 2D? (Also, i'm going to be an artist, just to point out.)

I think that it'd be best to be 'normal' rather than 8-bit/16-bit, given the styles of the artists signed on. By 2.5D do you mean the levels have depth, like this, as opposed to a 2D world like this? I'd imagine a 2D world would be easier to program, but whatever you guys want I'll go with.

Thinking about it, it may be best if I take on the leading/design role considering I'm programming it and hence know the limitations of what we're working with, plus I started the project so have a lot of motivation behind it... I've assigned everyone a role in the team, if you wish to change your role or otherwise drop out let me know. If you're happy, great, we can get started as soon as you're ready!

Music/Sound

Here are the music and sound effects that would be great for the level.

Drill Master

Make a single piece of music to play in the level, it could be as simple as a 30-second looped track.

Xiron

Find some suitable sound effects for walking and jumping, and maybe a coin sound or something too.

Artists

Seeing as we have three artists, I'll split you into separate elements of the game. If you're not happy with you're suggested element feel free to switch around. Please produce PNG images (use a string of multiple images for animations).

rioforce

Could you handle the level elements? So perhaps a tileable ground object and a tileable platform to stand on.

Ben24x7

Seeing as you've drawn a great many characters, could you do the main character? If you wish to animate him too, that'd be awesome, but if you separate out his limbs I can animate him myself if that's easier.

MaelstromIslander

Could you do interactive elements - things like coins, perhaps a trampoline to bounce on or an enemy to splat? If you wish to do an enemy, something simple in mechanics like a Goomba from Mario would be great.

I understand that you'll all come at this with your own styles - that's fine. Create your content how you're comfortable creating it. Also if any of you wants to produce more than I've requested, feel free to do so! I've just listed the basic requirements.

Sign with blood here, here, and here.

The induction ritual begins tomorrow at nine teen hundred and one hours sharp. Do NOT be late.

<Insert stuff here>

Final boss is potato king. Not arguing this point.

Oooooooh, sounds interesting... :o

I may be able to help with drawings and such if I get the time, but I should definitely be able to help bat around rough storyline ideas if you need me to at all. I can also write scripts for cutscenes and voiceovers if it's ever required, but for now that doesn't seem to be the priority here.

So yeah, sign me up! :P

Should i draw LEGO enemies or just my own style?

By 2.5D do you mean the levels have depth

Yes, i mean games like castle crashers, where the levels are made in layers.

A potato king... Now that's not a bad idea...

I'm going for bare-bones at the moment, so I have no consideration for any story, cutscenes or voiceovers... But I'll certainly keep that in mind for future reference. Thanks for the offer!

EDIT: Actually, you could take on the role of designer if you like? If people haven't already started on their parts, I'm happy for you to outline a theme. E.g. grass terrain, two-legged aliens, whatever. :P

Go for whatever you want, let's make this free to start with. Once we've got something functional and if people want to continue, we can refine our ideas. :)

I certainly can add depth to the level, but for simplicity's sake it may be best to start off a little more flat. Let's produce something we can actually finish with little work, and move up from there if desired.

You wanted a goomba, i gave you a goomba/kirby/subspace soldier. I also gave you a snakeman with a laser gun. I'm pretty satisfied with the coins' shading and lighting. Trampoline... Not so much.

Aw... too late to join in as an artist.

You can still join, there's nothing stopping you from doing so.

I'm alright with my position, but the only problem occurring to me is what the character looks like. :P

I've got a few ideas, but only a few.

Brilliant, those are great! Thanks Mael. :D

I have no idea... Something cheerful, maybe, but beyond that I can't really say. Do whatever you like, as I said to Mael earlier we can refine ideas once a basic game is made if people want.

I'm not sure what else needs doing at the moment actually. But I'll happily stick you on a list, and if this project continues I'll ask for help. :)

Alrighty, well you could either decide yourself or post up a rough sketch of each one for us to choose from?

I'd join, but I don't like collaborating in music. Yeah.

The coins are nice. :) I'm not a big fan of letters and numbers on coins, though.

letters and numbers on coins, though.

I wanted something to fill in the center, because it looked too blank.

After an hour (roughly) of trying to make a character that was A. Original, B. Not too Stereotypical and C. Not Shameful Self-advertising (A.K.A using my own characters which were created before this project was proposed).

The other problem reoccurring with the character creation is that since the story (and the "stage" for the character to preoccupy) hasn't been developed yet, if not at all, then it makes the design of the character harder because you need to make the character look like they "fit in" to their surroundings, but then sometimes the enviroment the character preoccupies is made AFTER the character creation.

Stimuli messes everything up, that's for sure.

So, because I can't think of designs for the protagonist, for now the main character will be a Rock Raider;

1ynQjSE.jpg

This is a temporary fix, once I can understand what the game is like, I'll do a proper character. Sorry for now...

Well, many game soundtracks have been composed by two people working separately (and occasionally together). Should we require more music, both you and DM could easily work on separate tracks for the same game.

I like it! I guess I hadn't considered going with a character at the core of Rock Raiders United. Where would RRU be without the RR?

Will you be animating him yourself, or would you like me to do it, if at all? If you'd like me to animate it, I'd need his limbs (upper arm, lower arm, head, etc.) to be drawn separately.

I don't have 2D animation software, but would it be possible if I sent a sequence of animation poses?

Also, I think I'll stick with using the Rock Raider instead.
