The Brickster Megamix

Okay, I honestly have no idea which subforum to post this in.  LEGO Island Discussion?  Island Xtreme Stunts Discussion?  Heck, even Digital LEGO Creations?

It's often been noted by LEGO Island fans that "Brickster Boss", the final boss theme of Island Xtreme Stunts, sounds somewhat like a dark reprise or boss remix of "The Jail" from the original LEGO Island.  Rather fitting, considering that both songs are meant to represent the Brickster.  What happens if you mix the two songs together?

You get "The Brickster Megamix".

Or, alternatively, "The Brickster Mixter".  Because puns.

This is something I first started experimenting on with Dino Attack: Legacy, but I never got it to work right.  By the time the mix was eight measures in, the two songs had already fallen out-of-sync with each other, which is the technical reason why I fade the mix out by that point.  It didn't help that the recording of "The Jail" was rather compressed and low-quality in comparison to "Brickster Boss".  This time, I decided to use the unused higher-quality recording left unused in the game's data.  With the crisper audio quality, I found it easier to determine and adjust its tempo in order to match that of "Brickster Boss".

"The Jail" is only barely over a minute long, while "Brickster Boss" is over four minutes.  As such, I had to loop several sections of "The Jail" in order to cover the length of "Brickster Boss".  Since the unused version of "The Jail" has no ending, I did borrow the final notes of the in-game version to end the mix.

The syncing still isn't quite perfect and there are some parts where one song overpowers the other, but overall I'm very satisfied with how this turned out.

I've never heard of

Really? You've never before heard anyone suggesting that "The Jail" and "Brickster Boss" sounded somewhat similar? That's funny (not the "haha" kind of funny, the... okay, forget it, I'm sure you've heard this one a million times already). While personally I have my doubts on whether or not the semblance was intentional, here's just a few quotes from YouTube:

This sounds similar to the Jail theme from the first game.

Also this is a remix of the Jail theme from LEGO Island, composed by Lorin Nelson.

The melody that the song starts off as that becomes the background line, so the tune from 0:00 onwards. It's a slower, deeper, orchestrated remix of the jail theme.

This one's not from YouTube, but it's relevant:

She suddenly felt her thoughts be interrupted by loud, booming brass instruments that echoed through LEGO City.

"I understand the whole 'playing music' thing," Laxus said, glancing out of his window and up into the sky. "But is it really necessary to have it so loud you can overshadow Dr. Rex's roar?"

Andrew didn't respond. Instead, he seemed to be humming to the song. "I know this. This is "The Jail Theme" by Lorin Nelson and the Lorin Swelk Orchestra. It was merry little tune that gave off an aura of a trickster, which is why many LEGO Islanders associate it with the Brickster."

"Doesn't sound like a trickster song," Minerva noted.

"Sounds more like a boss theme," Catless said from the back. At this point, demonic strings were being added to the blaring horns.

"That's because the song was remixed in 2002 to sound Darker and Edgier with a full booming orchestra," Andrew explained. "A boss theme would be accurate."

"So what your saying is-" Minerva couldn't finish her sentence as the loud music flew over their heads. Looking through the window, they could see wrecked-up looking T-1 Typhoon that shouldn't be flying. Many of its pieces had seemingly been replaced by more generic quadrennial bricks of a wide variety of colors. Every weapon on its hull was firing at full force, seemingly uncaring of whether it hit a Mutant Dino, a Dino Attack vehicle, or a building. It rained pure chaos upon everything in its sight. It laid every building in its path to waste, collapsing rubble on unsuspecting XERRD operatives and Mutant Dinos and causing collateral damage to any Dino Attack vehicle near its rampage.

"No way," Andrew said. "It's-" There was short muffle over the ominous music playing, then a cackling voice came to life so everyone on the ground could hear it.

"I am lord of the bricks! The king of the tricks! Of this and that, prick the pat!" The voice yelled out triumphantly. "Long live the Brickster! Hahahahahaha! Ha ha ha ha...ha!"

I've never had a reason to go to the song on youtube (of which, 2/3 comments quoted were by Lair) as I already have it in my music collect directly from the files, and I've never read that story of McStudz.

Fair enough.  Where I never owned Island Xtreme Stunts, my only method of listening to the song (at least, until I eventually downloaded the whole soundtrack) was through YouTube, where I was exposed to comments like these.  I just thought it was worth explaining the ideology behind this music mix, especially now that I know that said ideology isn't as prevalent as I had previously thought.  And yes, I know two of those quotes were from Lair... I probably should have just merged them together in one quote box.  But hey, at least I cited my sources so it wouldn't look like I was quoting three different people, right?  Though, once again, I wish the BZPower Archives were still intact because I'm pretty sure the LEGO Island 3 topic also discussed the similarities between "The Jail" and "Brickster Boss" (this is how I found out about "Brickster Boss" in the first place) and I could have used some of those quotes as well.  But, then again, I suppose I've already made my point and, at this point, further hammering in the point would just be overkill like overtime because we still haven't capped the point yet and standing here does nothing, GET ON ZHE POINT DUMMKOPF!

I always assumed that was some sort of a pizza-based alchoholic beverage (Which might not be too off the mark at certain points during the song!)

Anyways, it was certainly neat to hear somebody put the two songs together, as I also have long heard the similarities between the songs myself.

It felt kinda shaky to me at first but a little before 2:00 the tracks started playing off of each other in some really interesting ways and I got thrown into a kind of trance for the rest of the song.

Nice work, it's an fascinating study in the relationship between the tracks.
