E3 - "Lego Island(?)" scene disscussed

If you've read the discussion about the promotional Lego Island brick, you might've seen the video and know what I'm going to talk about. If you haven't seen/read either the Topic or the Video, here is a link to the video directly;

So, yeah. I'm wanting to discuss the short clip of what might've been an earlier version of Lego Island. To help with this, I've drawn up a recreation of what can be seen on-screen (except the bit at the lower right, that I'll talk about later);

This might've been a point where the Infomaniac (not included in the diagram) would show where Lego Island is located in the world. You know, since there is a picture of Lego Island and a 3D model of the Earth.

There is a dotted line made of bricks, but it is impossible to work out what the shape of the brick is, or even if its an actual Lego brick. Thats what I drew in the lower right, possible ways the Brick might've looked judging by the shading in the video footage.

One thing I want to point out too is the Infomaniac's entrance, which is pretty much a green round-edged window. We know (by as much the video clip shows us) that he enters through the window, but does he use it to leave? Another thing is that the clip starts just as he gets flung mid-way through the window, so it might've been he just randomly jumped through a glass-less window.

Another thing about the Infomaniac's entrance is the window piece itself. There are three studs on the window but in the clip (because the diagram isn't as accurate) there looks like there is enough room for a fourth stud along the top. The window's edges (like said) are rounded, how would that fit in with other Lego pieces?

Another thing I am considering is the walls, floor and ceiling. The floor and ceiling are coloured blue, while the walls from the left and right are green and the back wall is either non-existant or just bright white. This (might've) been an early colour arrangement for the Info center; Blue, Green and White, but you can just take this Theory with a pinch of salt.

I can't find this clip you're talking about.

Can you give a link?

Edit: Lol, the link is there, i'm such a noob. :P

The clip i'm guessing is an E3 Trailer that we're unaware of. Wish there was a better video filming the whole thing with sound. Then we could know what that nutjob is talking about.

But like ben said its probably about the island's location.

So, yeah. I'm wanting to discuss the short clip of what might've been an earlier version of Lego Island.

Uh... Did you read the topic you got that link from? It's not an early version of the game. It's just a short animated video they made for E3. The game itself was not shown. Also, that image of the island was a sort of stock promo image they also used in magazine advertisements and such.

So I recently discovered that rec.toys.lego is apparently still accessible. While having fun reading through the thoughts and opinions of 90s LEGO fans, I found this. More specifically, this message:

Hey Nick,

I have no Idea about the cost, but here's what I know.

When I went to E-3 this year, I was exited to see what the game was

like. I weaved my way through the throngs of people, catching glimpses

of a big red Lego logo above the crowd, up ahead.I stumble through, and

found myself standing in front of a 20 inch TV playing a 2 min loop of

computer generated animation, and a 2 min video clip of kids playing

with Lego Town pieces.

The TV was set into an interesting display that looked somewhat like a

Lego Police Station. Some parts were VERY realistic.

The animation sequence was of a day on Lego Island. This Island had Lego

Town streets, with a police station, construction vehicles, race cars,

mini-figs, fire station...etc. It looked alot like a display that would

appear in a Lego catalog, except not as rich with detail. There was a

mini-fig kid (Time Cruiser Style) on a little skateboard weaving in an

out of the cars and other figs. Lots of other little stories going on

in the background. It was cute.

The video portion showed avariety of kids playing with a real life

version of Lego Island, driving cars around, making hrrrrr-crassshhh

noises, the usual play. There was no narration that I could hear.

And that was it!! They gave away a 2 wide x 1 deep x 2 tall yellow Duplo

Brick with the name of the game of it. And Lego Master Builders were

there putting together two HUGE Lego computers. One was build with

standard bricks (twice to three times actual size) and one, made almost

the same, out of Duplo sized bricks. The Builders were wearing nice

yellow T-shirts with tasteful 2 inch Lego logos on the left chest

area.... I begged, but to no avail.

Anyway, it was nice to see Lego there, and they tried to make a cool

little display for the video. But that's all they had at the time of the

E-3 "convention" (mid May). Seems like they didn't know WHAT the game

was really going to be like. They were still researching what kids want.

So now we know what was going on at E3 to some degree. It would be really nice to be able to see that animation.
