LEGO Ideas Is Live!

LEGO CUUSOO has finally dropped its beta project (and odd enough name) to become LEGO Ideas. The layout of the site is much more streamlined and easy to find the most popular projects, which could be a double-edged sword.

On one side, we've got more projects which could potentially go into review. But on the other hand, it seems more one-sided. We now have "Staff Picks", where the team decides on the projects they like most and throws them at the top of the page for all to support. Then we have the popular projects, which get secondmost attention. We also can see the projects in review for next quarter, as well as order the sets CUUSOO had passed.

Random projects which you could see back in CUUSOO are all but gone, replaced with "recommended" projects. Close enough, I guess. But you only get a couple of those. You can also discover new projects by hitting "Discover" on the homepage (or any other page).

Is this a good new layout? Visually, yes. You can't deny that. But for noticing projects? That's a matter of opinion.

Any other thoughts?

I'll take the CUUSOO site (name and all) any day over what it has (in my opinion) been degraded to. In addition to some of the things you mentioned, they have made it so you can start submitting creations at age thirteen- another double edged sword, certainly. They also made a rule that it gets deleted after a year, no matter how much support you have received. This also makes it even harder than it currently is to have projects without a supporting IP behind them get to 10,000.

It's flawed, like any other human system, but much better than Cuusoo. People will actually put effort into their ideas when they know they have only a year.

Not necessarily, if they weren't willing to effort into their ideas when there wasn't a time limit, having one will not make them more diligent. However, the time limit will certainly cause those people who actually care to put more care into their projects. Additionally, the staff picks and clutch power system will, I think, give people a better idea of what LEGO and  supporters want. The site also feels more transparent, which is good. For example, in  the middle of the front page is a "Learn how it works" button. All in all, I think that the future is hopeful for LEGO Ideas.

It will at least, likely end the "Oh I have an idea, and if you vote I'll add a decent model" mindset. You can't change someone's diligence, but you can give them incentive to be more diligent, or in this case, a very clear disincentive to make slapdash projects.

Very true. However, there still seem to be many who think that a model rendered without any care  in LDD will suffice.

Hmm, perhaps they should fix the fact that, after you merge into the new system, you can go and support your own projects. I may or may not have done this with mine :P Though I know they'll never reach fruition because I don't have the time to devote to all the marketing and rendering the successful projects do. I'd still love to see them as sets though.
