Warner Bros. wants The LEGO Movie to become a franchise as big as Harry Potter and DC Comics.

While announcing Time Warner’s first quarter earnings on a conference call, CEO Jeffrey Bewkes indicated that the company’s success in its film arm could be attributed to The LEGO Movie’s global appeal, which merits the “continued development of franchise films.†A sequel to The LEGO Movie is already in the works.

Bewkes went on to call the LEGO property an “evergreen franchise that, along with DC Comics and with [Harry Potter creator] J.K. Rowling’s new series of films, will underpin the economics of our film business for many, many years.â€

Time Warner isn’t keeping their LEGO reach just to the movies -- Bewkes indicates that they’ll continue to maintain their “important video game and television properties†too with respect to LEGO.

Hoooooboy.

Oh great, does this mean TLM action figures? Megabloks buying in? :P How can you expand Lego without making it non-Lego... if you see what I mean. TLM t-shirts? Mugs? What else? Happy Meals? (Actually, last time I went to MacDonalds they already had those :P)

Not that we weren't expecting it to be the case but this pretty much confirms that TT games and LEGO will renew their contract in 2016 for many years to come.

Well, frankly put, it won't be as big.

Honestly, TLM was a great advertisement which was disguised. It was created as a glorified commercial, and the guys put in charge of making it decided to go the extra mile. Do you see ANY of them on the production team for the sequel? No? Exactly.

Now, I'm not saying TLM2 will be BAD. It just won't be as big. I mean, look at The Adventures of Clutch Powers. It was by its very nature a commercial. I only watched it because it was LEGO. Do people remember it, even when TLM was still in pre-production? Not really. Should they watch Clutch Powers? Probably not.

TLM was, by critics' standards, a "decent" film. The only reason it took off like it did is because of what its core was: LEGO. It was the first of its kind, and it was carefully and lovingly made by people who cared about both the product and the making of the film. If you took out the LEGO in The LEGO Movie, what do we have? A B-rated cartoon which would otherwise be forgotten before a couple years. People will catch on to this and move on.

Or maybe they won't. You see the Marvel films? They are currently the SECOND largest movie franchise (Recently beating James Bond and second only to Harry Potter). These films have a deep, interesting plot to them. TLM was no more than fan service done well. Like I said, without the LEGO, most of us wouldn't even be talking about it, on ANY social medium (or even have WATCHED it).

Basically, what I'm saying in this late hour is that TLM won't be a HUGE franchise. We'll have the sequel, some sets, and that's it. TLM can become too much of a good thing. It might take off in a completely consumer-oriented way (like the LEGO TT games), with the masses blindly buying the same reheated formula under a different name. Maybe the new producers and director will continue to do TLM justice. It's too soon to put the chips down yet.

What I am saying is, if TLM becomes a massive franchise, it's all thanks to it being just that: A LEGO movie. Something people wanted, and now that it's been delivered, the novelty is gone. Make too many sequels and spinoffs, and TLM will feel more thrown in one's face than something enjoyable. LIKE THE TT GAMES.

TL;DR? The masses will mindlessly consume any and all TLM sequels and spinoffs, but I won't expect ANY of them to have the same impact the original did.

I suppose this was inevitable, though it is still very  :/ . I want to be optimistic because there are at least a few cases where extending something past its natural life didn't end up too badly - look at Toy Story. I just hope that the right people will continue to put in the effort that made the first film what it was, so we don't end up with a flood of heartless merchandising and sequels and direct-to-DVD spinoffs that are just trying to grab a piece of the success of the first film.

I somewhat disagree with you there. It provided a bizarre and enjoyable twist on the

living toy genre,

that no movie has.

It was actually clever and inspired, something Clutch Powers was not.

Clutch Powers was by no means bad for a CGI cartoon aimed at 5-10 year olds. Oddly, I think if it had been bad, people would remember it better. It was good enough to be nonoffensive, but little else.

Along with Batman

Waitwaitwait what? Are you saying they are making a LEGO Batman Movie franchise? Why does LEGO keep messing up...

I dont know why ninjago is in TLM universe but i hope it has nothing to do with Bricksburg. But, if they have GOOD writers, unlike the show, then maybe this will be okay and they will do this correctly.

Because if it is too involved with TLM, then this will be an awful movie.

They are making a single LEGO Batman Movie film, but it isn't its own franchise, just a part of the existing LEGO Movie one.

The writers on Ninjago are the people who write the show, the Hageman brothers. I'm not a fan of their previous writing on Ninjago either, but they did pen the first scripts for the original LEGO Movie, so there's something in that.

They talk about each film having its own unique identity, so I think we can rest assured that neither will be "too involved with TLM."

I'm ambivalent on Lego Batman. On the one hand I loved the Lego Movie, and I really don't think that they'd do something like this unless they knew they could do it right.

On the other hand, I have a hard time seeing how it could be done right. I suppose we'll see.

I think you're using the wrong term. I know it's been months, but out of context, the implications of that quote are terrifying enough to merit re-mentioning.
