You could try reinstall the game, but I'm not an expert at this kind of stuff. Isn't this the demo version of LEGO Racers then? That'd be my explanation for the blacked out buttons. If it is, may it be that it just doesn't support saving (e.g. it's a full version feature only)? I'm not sure what the limitations of the demo version are. While I will not discount that is the same CD you used years ago, I would like to be sure we are dealing with a non-demo copy. So, can you check if you can view the game credits (Options > View Credits)? The demo strangely disables that button. If you can view them, then we can deduce the next move in fixing your game.
