lol username
55 years ago today, Godtfred Kirk Christiansen patented the LEGO brick. The company had existed since 1930, but it wasn't until 1958 that the now-famous toy brick design came to being. Check out this German commercial from that year, advertising LEGO as something for both family fun and serious architecture: The Guardian has published a story looking back at the last 55 years of LEGO, with scans of LEGO stories they published in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, from the first LEGOLAND attraction to the 1985 LEGO Dacta robotics systems. Gizmodo has also published an article with a high resolution scan of the original patent itself, and Sparkol VideoScribe has released a cool little video with some LEGO facts: Happy birthday, LEGO! Cyrem
I thought they were celebrating their 50th just the other day Actually, that was LEGO Australia. 55 is an odd number to be celebrating at. Usually it's every 25 years for these things.

Usually it's every 25 years for these things. Don't companies usually celebrate every single year after their 10th anniversary? Besides, this is just celebrating the brick's creation. LEGO's been running for a lot longer than that.
