LEGO Chess Patch

I read on Wikipedia that there was a patch for LEGO Chess, so I went looking for it.

First result: ftp://ftp.ea.com/pub/LEGO/patches/LegoChess/

Seems a bit strange that it's on EA's site... Did they ever publish LEGO Chess?

The patch doesn't work for me, it just makes the game keep asking for a disc, even though it's there.

Thought I might as well post it here anyway.

EDIT: Just found this patch: http://support.selectsoft.com/download/chesscdfix.exe

I don't need the CD in the drive any more, but it crashes randomly.

EDIT 2:
Archived patch from EA's FTP server:

I think I have two copies of LEGO Chess floating round my house... I bought two because they wouldn't work for this exact reason you posted: it would keep asking for the disc when the disk was in the computer.

I'll see if I can find them again and try and install the patches; you know, see if it's not just you.

The patch was made for the older copies. If you have the greatist hits version, (or whatever it's called) I think it doesn't need the patch.

After 2001, EA provided support for all LEGO games, including all Pre-2001 games. That's why the patch is on the EA site.

It was also EA that released the IXS patch that can no longer be found. I find it interesting that the patch for a game from the early 2000s is still on EA's FTP. If we could figure out the URL, we might get access to the IXS patch.

Funny you should mention that. I looked for the patch on there but couldn't find it.

Huh. Both are the same, but just so happens none fixes my problem. I am playing, but suddenly it just crashes. Tried doing it on Windows XP compatibility mode, lasted longer, but still crashed. I use Windows 7 x32. Help me out, I really love this game.

EDIT: Solved. Needed to run it in Win 95 Compatibility Mode.

Yeah, so a guy creates an account and tells us that the patch is safer from an unknown site instead of the official publisher's site.

Uh what? Did you even look at it? The "unknown site" is the site for Focus Multimedia, another publisher LEGO worked with. It's just as authentic as the other links here, and in fact it's the exact same exe as the one at the second link in the OP.

Thanks for the alternate link, new guy.

Hurrah! Hostility against strangers strikes again! Jamesster seems to have already taken care of the issue though, so I'll just shut my mouth now. :x

Hmmm. Mine does that already, and mine is an Encore release. No idea if there would be any version differences. Date modified is 12/02/1999.

Also, I can't run the patch, it says I must "enter a full path with a drive letter" when I try to run it. 64-bit problem? Edit: Confirmed for 64-bit problem. I may just make an IPS patch if the .exe is the only thing that gets modified.

Just adding missing information on how to use the chesscdfix in Windows XP:

  • Download Patch.
  • Create a folder in C:\ with a simple name (e.g.: 11)
  • Copy chesscdfix.exe into C:\11
  • Type the following command line into cmd
    C:\11\chesscdfix.exe /dir="c:\11"

cmd can be found by pressing START | Run typing cmd and hitting enter

It's will extract Lego Chess.exe to this folder

  • Copy the Lego Chess.exe from the C:\11 folder into your LEGO Chess folder.

  • Done
