Rather than besiege the forum with another what are you listening to brand topic, I made one to see what types of music and bands people were currently into. Feel free to make recommendations on what you think other people might like based on what they posted.

I'm a huge music listener and listen to a wide variety of stuff, but I'm definitely enamored with 1970s-era progressive rock and that era in rock music in general.

My Favorite bands of this type include:

Yes (Beautiful sweeping melodiousness

)

Genesis (Epic and diverse

)

Gentle Giant (Whimsical and complex

)

Focus (Great instrumentalists

)

Jethro Tull (Rock and Folk and more Rock

)

Van Der Graaf Generator (Heavy Prog, big influence on Rush

)

Along with Alan Parson's Project, Barclay James Harvest, Banco, Bo Hansson, Camel, Caravan, Earth And Fire, Egg, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Family, Gong, Electric Light Orchestra, Kansas, King Crimson, Magma, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Mike Oldfield, Jon Anderson, Peter Gabriel, Peter Hammill, PFM, Procol Harum, Supersister, Supertramp, The Moody Blues, The Strawbs, Steve Hackett, Utopia...

I'm also really into 60s stuff like psychedelic rock a la' Pink Floyd, The Beatles, and The Pretty Things, etc. Pretty much anything from that era aside from Soul & Pop.

I also listen to more recent bands like Motorpsycho, which are kind of hard to describe. They are kind of Progressive Heavy Metal Jazz Fusion Shoegazing Stoner Acid Rock. Well, probably best that I just link to a song they did:

(watch in HD for best quality ;) ) Couple other bands have caught my ear like Brighteye Brison, Battles, and Echolyn, but I'm always finding new bands with the wonders of the internet.

Also a little indie rock here and there where it matches my tastes, like Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.

Oh, you like prog and psychadelic rock too!

I listen to all sorts of rock. But what I listen to the most is progressive rock, psychadelic rock and hard rock from the late 60's to late 70's (and a tiny bit of 80's)

These are my favorite bands/the ones I listen to the most:

Jethro Tull (Prog rock, folk rock) (favorite song is probably Aqualung http://www.youtube.c...feature=related)

Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention (Prog rock, psychadelic rock, blues rock and more...) (so many good songs. Can't pick a favorite one, but here's one great song http://www.youtube.c...h?v=fiu6DFXeF9A)

Cream (psychadelic rock, blues rock, hard rock) (favorite song is Swlabr http://www.youtube.c...h?v=ngIxuGOVGeQ)

Jimi Hendrix (psychadelic rock, blues rock, hard rock) (all of his songs are my favorite http://www.youtube.c...h?v=4Kf-h3PMupk)

Deep Purple (psychadelic rock, blues rock, hard rock) (Lazy is definitely my favorite song http://www.youtube.c...h?v=YPM6ni4bQzc)

I also listen to:

Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Kansas, Iron Maiden, Van Halen, Boston, Rush, Queen, The Outlaws, Mountain, AC/DC, ZZ Top, The Who, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Guns 'N Roses, Nirvana (both the 60's prog rock band and the 90's grunge band), Foghat, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, The White Stripes and many more...

Some more recent bands I listen to: (and by recent I mean 90's and newer)

Queens of the Stone Age (hard rock, psychadelic rock, stoner rock) http://www.youtube.c...h?v=Too7nGq_GNA

Blur (alternative rock, indie rock) http://www.youtube.c...h?v=C2fkbyU0D1o

Nirvana (grunge, alternative rock) http://www.youtube.c...h?v=uItAH1nA990

Rage Against the Machine (funk-metal, alternative-metal with a bit of rap) (I hate rap, but this is alright) http://www.youtube.c...h?v=arCgCyfth10

Audioslave (hard rock, alternative rock, alternative metal) (It's the same band as above but with a different singer and less rap no rap) http://www.youtube.c...h?v=scsMEIjVfkk

The Black Keys (blues rock) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5FW8Xo8ENo

Focus (Great instrumentalists http://www.youtube.c...h?v=P0ly_bCQ2dY)

Focus is great! This is my favorite song with them. Must be the live version though. http://www.youtube.c...h?v=g4ouPGGLI6Q

I play guitar myself. Hoping to be good some day...

Oh yeah, I'm going to see a Zappa concert in November. Not Frank Zappa, he's dead (unfortunately), but his son, Dweezil Zappa. He will be playing his father's songs. Gonna be awesome.

EDIT:

Nope. :(

While not exactly on what you are asking, this post got me thinking about what artist do I set as my true roots of music, the artist that I will never lose my respect for and who is my biggest inspiration. While a person can like many artists, there is usually just one artist that is your all time favourite or can happily say their music is 'you'...

For me, it is non-other than Coldplay.

Can't wait to see them in concert in November.

If you like Zappa you should check out Supersister (NOT the pop band from the 90s). They went through a lot of different phases, but they all of em are great:

http://www.youtube.c...h?v=cK1tOxjihYI

http://www.youtube.c...h?v=4JxN5yP9SwA

http://www.youtube.c...etailpage#t=42s

http://www.youtube.c...h?v=N15syTw5yTw

And definitely Gong

http://www.youtube.c...h?v=Sgl1prNrX-Q

http://www.youtube.c...h?v=_xbaXsYNWgY

http://www.youtube.c...h?v=iiy5K81qvbg

http://www.youtube.c...h?v=CKfTKNp_yUI

I liked them when I was younger (and still do, particularly Lover's In Japan) but got into other bands from Britpop and after, primarily Oasis. If you haven't heard them before I would check them out. I prefer them after their poppier Britpop phase when they did stuff like this:

http://www.youtube.c...h?v=zq0DldWTXdA

Unfortunately Oasis split up recently, but reformed as two separate entities, Beady Eye:

http://www.youtube.c...h?v=pcOJu0g8dbw

And Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, which I think you'll probably really like, as Noel Gallagher stems from the same post-Britpop scene that Coldplay does:

http://www.youtube.c...h?v=OJTnP6ylTK8

And another band I just thought of, which is a bit out there (literally, they're Icelandic) is Sigur Ros which has that airy sound but obviously more focused on soundscapes since they are technically a post-rock band, but if you haven't heard of them you've probably heard this number:

http://www.youtube.c...h?v=qmXMA34CeoQ

But they have a lot of other stuff I like:

My taste in music is sometimes random, but mainly its chiptune, 8bit, and video game music (VGM), because video games have some of the best music. I also like other things, but they're entirely random. The Katamari sound track, single songs by people, and some lapfox, although the deeper you delve into that one the weirder it gets.

Lada Laika, the most underrated musician ever:

Jamendo | Last FM | Soundcloud, where he puts his random things that he does, like his 8bit version of the Game of Thrones theme.

NoLife Radio, the internet radio station for nonstop VGM: http://nolife-radio.com

Katamari, which I just realized falls under the category of VGM, but it's weird enough to say separately.

The list of old (bloody brilliant) music modules from the days of Amiga

I've got a few others, but but I've forgotten what they all are and they're all on Debian, so I'll reboot later and update this.

EDIT 1: How could I forget the Chipophone?! I want one of these.

I watch a certain caster on twitch and he absolutely loves a somewhat unknown band in particular. Mystery Skulls. I might as well thrown in Caravan Palace too. This caster was also the one who showed me nolife-radio.

This guy. I'm addicted to his music. It's like orchestral breakbeat chiptune electronic techno sometimes-cheery-sometimes-dark... Stuff. Lots of variety but sort of sharing the same general style. And it's awesome.

Some personal favorites:

Toxic Sewers

Pixelspace

Killstealer

Blast Processing

Race around the moon

Ricochet Love

C-Jeff is the only chiptune thing that I know of that comes to mind for me, but that's only because its influenced by prog lol

Where to begin, where to begin...

I listen to a lot of music, and I tend to drift from genre to genre every now and then, and thus don't really stick to specific artists... HOWEVER:

Def Leppard (Their drummer, Rick Allen, is my biggest influence. I actually prefer their obscure stuff, such as Overture, When the Walls Came Tumbling Down, and this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxKHWeOcl0U )

Manraze (Also spelled Man Raze: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_3Wi7mI2ks )

Emerson Drive (Country. I have an odd obsession with them, and don't know why, as I'm not much of a fan of country: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzriEXPJ1-k )

And, since I'm too lazy to keep finding links, here's a list of some others:

Van Halen, Queen, Rush, Aerosmith, Toto

Also, Rick Astley: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfRfPon9vmU

Ever listen to Asia? They had 1 good album in the 80s that I know of, but I haven't listened to their other stuff. The Def Leppard reminded me a bit of Chris Squire + Steve Hackett's ("Squackett") new album:

http://www.youtube.c...h?v=2Rh8rxGYfHM

and I guess Steve Hackett's stuff in general

I'm a very mainstream gaming and movie/tv music fan, specifically stuff from Halo, Need for Speed, The Simpsons Game, Mirror's Edge, and a couple tracks from Assassin's Creed 2, but especially stuff from Evangelion (Rebuild of). Not only that, but I also LOVE, LOVE classical/orchestral music, stuff from the oldies like Beethoven, Mozart, Verdi and stuff from the new guys like Hans Zimmer, Two Steps from Hell and Clint Mansell. Also, a little dubstep goes a long way (I have no favorite artists in that category).

Let me share some personal favourite songs:

Halo: Halo 3 Warthog Run (Tweaked):

Need for Speed: Born Free - MIA:

The Simpsons Game: Heaven Can Be a Hell of a Place:

Mirror's Edge: The Shard:

Assassin's Creed 2:

Evangelion: Angel of Doom:

Evangelion: Destiny: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X95dn04x7Mc

Beethoven: 9th Symphony:

Mozart: Requiem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X95dn04x7Mc

Verdi: Requiem, Dies Irae:

Hans Zimmer/Inception: Time:

Two Steps from Hell: Archangel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1bm2CgrciA

Clint Mansell: Lux Aeterna: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKLpJtvzlEI

Dubstep: If I Die Young:

You should see my library, minusing the 5000+ extracted sound clips from at least 300 games, I have over 3000 songs.

And so is Motorpsycho

My current song count is at 6119 :P

Roughly 18 days of music

Spotify is your friend, granted I dunno how much video game music they have :P

Chris Squire + Steve Hackett's ("Squackett") new album:

This was an interesting song.

You ever listen to Focus?

(they're a little crazy)

or Drama-era Yes?

Currently I'm into ProgSymph metal. Bands such as Opeth and Symphony X.

For a good example of Opeth, look up "Death whispered a lullaby" OR "The lotus eater"

Symphony X are hard to classify, but my favorite songs by them are "Iconoclast" and "Divis Pennae ex Tragoedia"

Oh, by the way. I'm named after the 'Dead song "Sage and Spirit"

Both of those bands are really good. Opeth is the Yes of Prog metal. I like their album Heritage a lot. You might be interested in Storm Corrosion as its a joint effort between Akerfeldt from Opeth and Steve Wilson of Porcupine Tree. It's a lot quieter than what they are known for but its still pretty sweet.

Zephy approves so much.

The video for it is amazing, too. It has a kind of Tim burton feel to it.
