Lego Racers Revisional Differences

Mr. Eight-Three-One

I remember my friend had a copy with an autoplay screen (The windows that pop up upon inserting the disc, which give you various options, whether it be to proceed, read the manual, or quit). Thing is, I vividly remember his didn't have the copy protection. It also had the extremely ugly "masterpiece" border. My version is also the 2001 version, but it has no autoplay other than to install. Does anybody else have this?

Modded Lego

Ok here are my results from the LR1 Checksummer: :af:

LegoRacers.exe:

LegoRacers.icd:

not found

HUH! O_O This is the only thing that is different and the EXE has different values. :S I have the 1999 version so the LegoRacers.icd should be there. Unless they made a version, which I have, that got rid of having the disc to play and still had the trophies and the full screen loading screens! WEIRD! :P

Hope this will help

What on earth? Your 1999 copy is dated 7-23-1999, @ 00:55:48 and mine is dated 07-23-1999 at 21:45:56! But our LEGO.JAM and GolDP.dll are the same, but your's has no copy-protection! What is going on here?! Maybe the devs weren't sure about having copy-protection in the first place, and a few didn't have any? But the manual clearly states it has to have the CD.... ModdedLego, do you need have your CD in your computer to run your 1999 LR?

O.T.

Nobody make any LEGO Island references here, or the :af: get's it. :P

Durr...okay I'm really lost now. I thought the insane amount of reissues of Humongous games got confusing enough, but now THIS!? Geesh, what happened?

Don't know! :?: I thought I had the same 1999 version as everyone else and I too thought that there was only one 1999 version! Guess I was wrong! :gasp:

Well, it's certainly a weird find. Actually, you're extremely lucky, because if you ever want to back it up, you can without SafeDisc getting in the way.

I wish I had 7 pro or higher for xp mode so the game would run smooth...or if I had an xp disc to create the virtual hard drive myself...

XP Mode doesn't even support 3D acceleration. The game would run, but it would look horrible and crash a lot.

Ugh...what happened to you, Windows? Well, I found out the problem anyways: it's not the OS, it's probably either the graphics card or the processor, both of which are AMD, but LR requires Intel...

Mr. Eight-Three-One

It's the graphics. In order for LR to run properly, you need 3D acceleration. Very few VMs support this feature though, and XP Mode is one that doesn't. I hear VMware and VirtualBox have support for it, but it's still not the best. My advice is to just find an older computer with it.

Since when did LR require Intel? I have both an AMD CPU and GPU at home, and I have never had issues with game play. It worked just as well that when I had a nVidia laptop GPU (minus a good framerate, but that was due to the poor quality of the GPU). This is the first time I've ever heard of LR requiring an Intel card. Any modern PC can run LR (well, maybe except for a netbook and ultrabook. Ugh, don't get me started on those fads...). Some do it bester than others (jamesster's laptop has a better FPS than his desktop in LR), but they all run it. Heh, I've even installed LR on a machine running Win8 that factory shipped with Vista hardware and OS and it runs properly.

Intel and AMD processors use the same instruction set. Intel does make better processors, but I've run LR on both just fine. LR predates AMD so they wouldn't have know it supports it.

Also, I agree direct 3D support is poor on all virtualizing software I've tried (I haven't tried VMware though).

Mr. Eight-Three-One

From what I've gathered, here's the support on most VM software...

Virtual PC 2007 -- none at all. Then again, it emulates a Pentium II, so why even bother?

Windows Virtual PC -- Again, none. From what I hear though, it works effectively at the speed of a Pentium III or IV. So again, does it even matter?

VirtualBox -- has some, but it's not that good from what I can gather.

VMware -- from what I hear it has the best, but I haven't been able to try it as I don't have any OSes that support it, as you need Windows 2000 or better to support it.

DOSBox -- Windows 95 was the first one to support 3D, and there are custom builds that have Voodoo emulation support, but good luck. Windows 9x support on DOSBox is hardly developed yet, and as such, it's unstable as can be and has a nasty tendency to crash over simple commands, like opening a folder. It certainly doesn't help that, unlike Windows 3.1, Windows 9x is independent of DOS in several ways, which just makes it even harder to work with. The worst part? This is the closest we've come to 3D acceleration on 9x emulators thus far.

Windows 2000 or better? Linux! :P

Anyway, I can add to this list:

Parallels -- About the same as VirtualBox, better is some aspects, worse in others.

The game says Pentium 166 MHz or faster required...Pentium being a product of Intel. The game runs just fine on my mother's AMD CPU, but it's really choppy and it runs at a very low frame rate (probably around 30 FPS). That's why I used my divine mind trick abilities (master at convincing weak-minded people here) and my grandparents succumbed and bought me an old XP laptop for a decent price. Runs very well at 62 FPS on this thing.

*sigh* They're too young to know...

When LR came out, the Pentium was the reigning king of processors. AMD did exist...but not really. The people who made the processor don't really matter though, the architecture is exactly the same, AMD makes the cheaper ones, but Intel makes the stronger ones. On a game that requires 166 MHz though, it really doesn't matter.

On my Windows 8 computer, it runs at 25 FPS actually, and it's an Intel. Strangely though, turning on a second screen fixes it. Figure that one out.

My 1999 version runs without the cd.

That makes 2 people that have a no-cd 1999 version.

Could you run the checksummer and post the results?

EDIT: Hmm... It seems you have the same version that Modded Lego has.

Now I want one!
