First thoughts - Pokemon White 2

I want to like this game. But as USUAL Nintendo messes up something. White 1 had a relatively short storyline that, although philosophically deep, wasn't very engaging. Pokemon White 2 has fixed that issue, but also has probably the most stupid mistake in the game. They expect you to level grind before the first gym leader, but you'll find that to be ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE with the system in place. There are way too few trainers before you reach that area, and the wild Pokemon in the area are some of the weakest "com-mons" ever. Some examples: Sunkern (known for being the weakest Pokemon in terms of stats) and Azuril (right behind Sunkern). They don't give ANY worthwhile exp, and I bet they actually HURT your effort values.

I can't really give a full review as I'm absolutely stuck and am considdering resorting to trading over my White 1 competitive team and just steamrollering the game. A VETERAN competitive battler resorting to borderline CHEATING! When that ends up being an issue, you know the game wasn't properly planned.

Do what I just did with Pokemon Yellow (That's right: I actually went back and PLAYED that thing):

So, I've got a Pikachu and a crapton of pokemon I've caught. I'm headed to Pewter City, only to realize I can't go much further without defeating Brock. Knowing I only have a Pikachu (Not that good against Rock-types) and several low-level Pokemon, I do what is necessary: GRINDING.

A couple hours of grinding later, I've got a decent team. Not a super effective team, but if I play my cards right, the odds may be in my favor.

I've got five Lv. 7-9 generic Pokemon and one Lv. 12 Pikachu against Brock's two Lv. 10-12 Rock-types. In my opinion, this will be the closest call in the game.

I chip away at Brock's pokemon's health with Normal-type moves until I'm down to two pokemon with half of their HP left. With a little luck I was able to FINISH HIM by the skin of my teeth.

If I know anything about Pokemon games, I'm pretty sure all you need to do is spend a bit of time grinding and outnumber your enemy by having a full roster of pokemon against the first gym leader's two (usually) pokemon.

I dunno, but that's my personal experience. I stopped playing Pokemon after Emerald, so I don't know how much has changed (save for a clean reboot in Black and White--NO MORE ZUBATS AND GEODUDES IN CAVES!).

Anyway, just take my advice: Pointless Grinding. If you've got the time, that is. Seeing as I wasn't on the computer doing this, I had the time.

They made grinding almost impossible in the fifth generation games. The level system has always been exponential, but they also added level ratio-based experience points. The higher your levels get, the slower your pokemon gain experience. The only good thing to come out of this is that effort values can skyrocket past what the previous generations allowed.

Well... at least my Riolu is going to be super-powerful later on in the game.

*sees mention of EVs*

HAW HAW HAW

But seriously, if you're going to go through so much effort to raise a pokemon with the perfect balance of nature, moves, EVs and... the other values... you might as well create it with a Gameshark/Action Replay. I don't care about if you're trying to be honourable, it's too much effort for something as bloated -- and in some cases restricted -- as Pokemon.

But GSC was the last generation I really liked. RSE was okay but it was really starting to get boring. Then I discovered Pokemon romhacks. Prism was fun and has a lot of new features but is still unfinished. Quartz is hilarious in a crappy way.

It's a Pokemon game. They're all the same. You buy one you buy them all.

Sounds a lot like TT LEGO games.

I enjoy the challenge of doing so. On White 1 some of my Pokemon were downloaded from GTS utilities, but only to stand in for a tournament-legal team.

The issue I was having though (I finally beat what could be considered the hardest first gym in Pokemon game history) was the combination of the computer's habit of cheating (There seems to be an awful lot of underleveled evolutions and movesets these days) and plain-old anti-grinding programing (level ratio-based experience gain needs to go).

Edit:

Um... yeah... about those Zubats...
