Software I Like That People Hate... A Bit Of A Confused Rant.

I'll make this a list...

1. Source SDK

I know, I know... source is outdated. Heck, it even annoys me because of that. I still like it because of VALVe's business ethics. Yeah, VALVe time isn't exactly the best business ethic, but they are really open to the use of their software unlike other companies. Also, you can actually edit the source code of the engine for your mod. I'm really confused as to why people downplay the Source SDK in favor of Unreal (although CryEngine I can understand - I've never see water effects that good).

2. Microsoft Virtual PC

This is one that really makes me scratch my head. Microsoft Virtual PC is easily and readily available, runs on any modern version of Windows, and integrates well with your computer's drivers (the only OS I've had issues with is Freespire, since it's not compatible with any standard drivers and requires open-source equivalents). Why all the hate? What makes programs like Virtualbox or VMWare superior? The only things I've heard about other virtualization programs is that they have problems with drivers.

3. Linux - Most if not all flavors

I know there actually are quite a lot of Linux fans on RRU. But there are tons of Linux haters in the world in general. My personal experience with Linux has been mostly good, and most of the people I've talked to also have had good experiences with different flavors of Linux. But when I talk to most people who know of Linux, they go out of their way to bash it, saying things that immediately give me the impression that they have never even touched it. I really don't get it.

4. avast! Antivirus

Most people tell me that it doesn't work and eats up system resources. I've never had those issues. Honestly, if I had an issue it's that avast! works TOO well and tends to overreact, and it seems to be pretty light-weight on my machine. Have most people who hate avast! even used it yet, or are they just assuming it's like Norton or Kaspirsky because they haven't heard of it?

5. Sony Vegas Movie Studio.

I admit I have an older copy (Vegas 9 Platinum with the pro resource package), but I've never really had problems. Yet everyone tells me to ditch it for Adobe Premier and After Effects. First off, I hate Adobe's stinking guts almost as much as Nintendo (for their worse-than-ACTA legal policies) and Apple (for existing), but that's besides the point. Objectively, I see no reason to make the switch. I can do everything I need with Vegas and a few other programs, why should I purchase an entirely different program and have to learn how to use it?

Yay for another Vegas user. I've stuck with 8 Pro since I haven't bought a newer version and I see no reason to yet.

My brother and I use Vegas Home Studio 9 for our movies. We have 2 versions: 9.0b and 9.0c. The only difference is that the latter does HD. I just hate the fact they made an update and called it a new product. (mad) I see no reason to switch, for a few reasons:

1: We use custom render templates all the time. But the new version (Movie Studio 11) doesn't allow that. They've made it more "consumer-friendly" by taking that and other stuff and moving it to the higher end products. Ugh.

2: Other products like Premere Elements run best (and in my test, only run) on Intel CPUs, and I have AMD everywhere expect for a small laptop. PowerDirector acts like a expensive version of WMM (not WLMM. They are two different things). Each video must be placed end to end to each other. You cannot pull them out somewhere in the timeline. We pull things out all the time as well, and while we own a copy of PowerDirector, it's not even installed.

3: iMovie isn't even on my radar. I am in the process of getting some money to buy a laptop, and a MacBook is $1000. 1K can buy a Windows machine that will smoke a MacBook like a lead-free pellet hits a squirrel faster than a lead pellet. I wish I had its movie trailer soundtracks, but I'm not crazy enough to buy a Mac (or iLife itself) just for the music and a piece of software that won't run on my PC.

I'm using Vegas 10 Platinum HD. Parents bought me a copy a while back for a school project, and it's a good thing they did because it's become extremely useful for my current projects.

I can't speak to the general features of Vegas as I've never used it but Premiere is best when trying to manage a workflow into After Effects. It requires no compression between the two softwares so for film/videomakers who are concerned about that it's a preferred duo.

Concerning Valves Source Engine, it's not outdated, not at all, though Vavle's versioning might be a bit confusing as they don't tend to release their updates officially or with a 2.0;3.0 suffix. Every game developed by Valve features the latest incarnation of the source engine and if you apply as an official developer for a source license, you will get the latest version. You will then be able to see that it includes most of recent technologies (however it surely isn't as advanced as unreal 4 and it's not valve's goal to compete against it).

And in case somebody tries to compare it to Cry Engine 3 or Unreal 4 just remind yourself that valve is about story-telling and not about highend-graphic's-but-no-story-to-tell like bulletstorm (my personal letdown -.-).

Avast: It is the best free ant-virus software I have used the only other one was AVG but that did eat the system resources and I don't want a program I have to pay for.

Sir. You know your stuff. Goodbroisgood.

And the only reason some people hate Linux is because they're either:

1. Too lazy ("oh I have to type this command aw darn this sucks eff linux"),

2. Their minds are not able to comprehend how computers really work, due to the simplicity of the Windows GUI,

3. They follow trends that are completely wrong,

4. They can't help it; they don't know how to use BASH, SH or the base kernel (whichever you prefer) and they don't understand the documentation,

5. They don't like penguins.

That is my say. And I also just needed to waste some time.
