He wasn't. It's forced service, if you refuse they'll probably put you in jail for a few years. Thats what some countries do.

In the states, men who avoided the draft (which you might know is where every able-bodied male within an certain age range can be selected for military service if the gov needs to build an army) and were caught were sentenced to prison (I think). I don't know for how long but the draft isn't needed anymore since our military is entirely volunteer-based now. Still, once a male in this country turns 18 he must sign up for the draft, but if the draft were ever called again the political backlash would be astronomical.

I don't know why we would need a draft anymore anyways. With how obsessed the US is with guns, any enemy force stupid enough to invade would get destroyed, especially if they get to the redneck states.
