Hey guys! As you may know, I went to watch the movie Gravity in IMAX 3D today. I decided to write a review of it and share my thoughts. This review DOES HAVE MAJOR SPOILERS, so if you wish to experience the movie on your own, DO NOT open them. All un-spoilered content will just be basic info and my thoughts. So if you are interested, read on as we dive into Drill Master’s IMAX 3D Experience: Gravity!

Movie Details:

Gravity (October 4, 2013) (USA)

PG-13

90 Minutes

Drama, Sci-Fi, Thriller

Directed By: Alfonso Cuarón

Writers: Alfonso Cuarón, Jonás Cuarón

Stars: Sandra Bullock, George Clooney, Ed Harris

Music: Steven Price

A medical engineer and an astronaut work together to survive after an accident leaves them adrift in space.

Here we go. The details.

I’m going to break it down into many parts: Beginning, Middle, End, Graphical Aspect, Musical Aspect, Misc., and Final Thoughts/ Rating.

Beginning:

Space. The Final Frontier. This is the voyage of me going the theater to watch Gravity. The lights fade. The screen displays “Put on your 3D glasses nowâ€, and the IMAX intro countdown begins.

The movie starts, displaying facts about Space. Facts like the temperature varies from 200° F in the sunlight, to -200° F in the shade. How it is completely silent, that you can’t hear anything in Space, the normal facts. As this happens, the music gets progressively louder. Then suddenly, the picture changes to show a space shuttle floating in orbit. At that same instant, the music stops, and the theater goes as silent as Space. Dead silent. I could hear the guy in the front row rustle his popcorn bag. Without saying too much, three astronauts are working outside the shuttle Discovery on the Hubble telescope. (Some things may be a little twisted as I couldn’t write down info during the movie.) They then get a call from Mission Control saying that shrapnel from a Russian satellite was heading their way, and to abort the mission. What happens next is shown in the previews for Gravity. Discovery gets bombarded by the shrapnel, tearing it up, as seen in the previews.

Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is launched into space as a result of a piece the satellite slamming into one of Discovery’s wings, causing it to death spiral. Ryan, who is attached to the robotic arm of the shuttle, gets slung around until the arm gets broken off, and she is sent into the darkness of space. Then astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) finds her using his thruster pack. They rendezvous with the now obliterated Discovery, only to find the rest of the crew had perished. They use the remaining fuel to get to the ISS (International Space Station)

Middle:

The middle section and ending will basically be spoilered. Again the spoilers are there for a reason. I pretty much explain the whole movie in the spoilers, so DO NOT OPEN THEM if you want to see it for yourself. Just skip down to the Graphical Aspect section now.

Anyway…

They go to the ISS, which had been slightly damaged, and cannot slow their approach. They strike the station hard and struggle to grab hold of it. Then Ryan’s leg gets caught in the ropes from the deployed parachute of one of the Russian return capsules. Matt then realizes that he is dragging both of them back out towards space, with no way to return. He decides to unhook his tether and floats off into space, talking to Ryan up until they lose radio contact. Ryan then enters the ISS and calms down. Suddenly, a fire sparks up in the station and Ryan rushes to put it out, but is unable to stop it and makes her way to the remaining Russian capsule. She ejects the capsule from the station, but the parachute catches, sending the capsule back towards the ISS. She balances it out, and goes to detach the parachute manually from the outside.

End:

Basically, the rest of the movie is a need-to-watch basis. Seriously, go see the movie. I can’t bring myself to even put it in a spoiler. I’ve said enough in previous spoilers anyway.

Graphical Aspect:

Ok. Graphics in this movie IMO were definitely top notch. The pictures were amazing, detailed, brilliantly colored, and just wow. I can’t stress this enough. The graphics were the best I’ve ever seen. Also everything is in space, so everything had to act like it’s in space. They did an extraordinary job making the audience feel like they are actually floating there with the characters. The only downside of watching Gravity in IMAX 3D is that when I buy the Blu-ray, it just won’t be the same.

Musical Aspect:

Thank you, Steven Price. The music really fit into the story. My favorite parts on the audio were when the music would be very dramatic, and then cut to silence, to simulate Space, as I talked about earlier. The score was wonderfully written, thrilling at times, slow and mellow at others. Great music all around. Definitely going to buy the soundtrack to add to my collection.

Misc.:

That is about it for talking about the movie. I did notice some things that were odd. One thing in particular was what I would say a reference from Wall-e, whether or not it was intentional.

Reference Spoiler:

In Gravity, Ryan uses a fire extinguisher to propel her towards the Chinese space station. In Wall-e, he uses an extinguisher to dance with Eve.

Final Thoughts/ Rating:

That wraps it up for my review of the movie Gravity in IMAX 3D. It was a great movie. I’d recommend it to anyone who loves space. It is a great adventure, and if you go see it, have fun. I would rate this 10/10. Thank you for reading and post comments down below.

If I get the chance, I may go see Ender’s Game when it comes out on November 1, 2013. From the preview, it’s another Sci-Fi film with a Halo feel to it. If I see it, I might also do a review on it.

(Also, one last note. This is my first review on anything, so it is a little choppy. Also, if I didn’t say enough, or said too much, (which is why I spoilered content and warned you about it) let me know. I did a review because I need to get back into typing stuff, and I never done a review before, so I thought it would help me out.)

I just saw the movie, and I agree that it was pretty good, even though I'm not a movie person.

O.T.
A note about the Ender's Game movie that you mentioned at the bottom; read the book first. The movie looks fine, but I don't think it is humanly possible to get close to achieving the moral and psychological messages that the book has in a movie. The might do OK with the action and intensity, but as big of book as it is, they just can't get in everything.

We were shopping yesterday for our camping trip today, and I walked past the book section and just glanced at it and saw the book and bought it! I'm gonna start reading it tonight.

There's a whole series and a parallel series that goes along with Ender's Game that is also worth getting into. See Speaker for the Dead and Ender's Shadow.
