Exploits are fun

Found an exploit allowing me to load DLC content from LEGO Star Wars The Force Awakens. Working on getting textures and models to load but that will take some time while I mess with the DAT format (need to figure out how to remove files from the archive).

LEGO Case for Arduino Ethernet

Recently, I have been working with an Arduino Ethernet (well, not an official Arduino. It's an Andymark clone that's just as good) that I found buried in my robotics teams many boxes of electrical components. We had never used it before and it wasn't surprising considering we don't have any means of programming it (unlike the Uno, this device requires an FTDI cable or ISP programmer). Currently I am working to find an alternate method to loading sketches onto the board.

 

That aside, I felt that the Arduino ought to be out in some sort of case while I work on it. I attempted to 3D print a case for it that was provided by the manufacturer but the results were sub-par (a case means the whole thing not just a bottom plate). Not currently willing to take the time to CAD a new case, I continued to search for a cheep and quick solution. Then I remembered that there were things called LEGOs! After digging through my part box to find any useful spare parts. Eventually I came up with this prototype.

In its current form, the case works pretty good. However, there are some issues with the design. In order to have some form of access to the MicroSD without opening the case, the board had to be pushed as far back as possible. By doing so though, it becomes harder to access the Ethernet and power ports and some of the analog and digital pins become no longer accessible when the case is open. The hole for the FTDI cable is quite tight as well and may not fit the cables plastic housing. Lastly, the top cover does not feature any holes to give access to the pins on the board. Seeing the issues that this board had, I have designed the following case in LDD.

The new design resolves the issues with access to the pins as well as access to the Ethernet and power ports. The FTDI hole has also been widened to resolve any spacing issues. The estimated cost for the parts needed to build this case from Pick A Brick is $10.85 USD.

Three Announcements

Hello all, it's been some time since my last post here. Been kinda busy over the past few months so I been mainly lurking. Anyways, I have a couple of important(ish) announcements.

First off, I now have a new website. Well not really a new website but really a new domain for my old one. It can be found at http://blog.csmedia.x10host.com. The same usual stuff can be found there such as my posts from here, project pages, etc. I also now have a professional portfolio at http://csmedia.x10host.com. Old links should still work for at least the next three to six months.

 

Secondly, I have made a logo for ATP. If you thought that project is dead, it isn't. Work on it has just stopped temporarily, I hope to resume working on it soon. A project page for it on my website will be available soon. Also, I hope to share some screenshots of upcoming new content soon.

Lastly, me and some other people are currently working to rip and analyze files from LEGO City Undercover for the Wii U. This project is expected to take quite some time (acquiring the files is expected to take the longest). More updates will be posted as made available.

Microsoft Home Use Program

Time for some random babbling about Microsoft Office and the Home Use Program.

Just got Office 2016 for really cheep. Not just the basic set either, the entire thing. Well, except Project and Visio.

And it was only $9.95

Project and Visio are extra $10 charges each. (so to truly have everything I would need $30) Eh, I have older versions of those so no need to upgrade yet.

Although now that I think of it, I haven't even tested it to see if it works.

American Traffic Props - Version 1

I'm proud to release today the first version of the American Traffic Props for LEGO Worlds. This pack contains many props including traffic lights, crosswalks, intersections, and more! These props are in the LXFML format and should be installed in the same way as other models. Sunday Special: Power Poles!

Good day all! Just got done with a 17 hour power outage today after a huge wind storm passed through the area. That being said, I got a bit bored and decided to mess around in LDD. I made some power poles for LEGO Worlds that come in both 2-line and 3-line variants. There are also variants of whether the pole has a transformer or not. Do be aware that these models don't include power lines so you will have to build them yourself. If anyone wants to see more different types of poles let me know and I'll see what I can do!

Since it's the end of the week, I would like to share some more screenshots of some of the new content coming soon. Model ripping has slowed down a bit as for the noesis script that Sluicer is working on will most likely be a better alternative for model ripping once the script supports textures so I plan on waiting until the update is available. As for the traffic props, many new road tiles as well as some other props have been added.

This weekend, I decided to take a break from model ripping to work on a new project, that project is to add American-style traffic props and road pieces to LEGO Worlds. I plan to add many things including freeway pieces, traffic control props, parking pieces, and more. While this project will likely grow quite large, I still plan to continue model ripping from LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga.

If you have ever have attempted to mod LEGO: Star Wars The Complete Saga, you may have discovered that the games characters don't have any texture files. Unfortunately, the textures were embedded in the GHG model files themselves. A quick look at the STORMTROOPER_PC.GHG file confirms these suspicions.

Sure enough, after the 30 byte header of the GHG file, the header of the first texture file (DirectDraw Surface) begins with its image data following afterwards. Using a hex editor, it is possible to extract and edit each texture from the file. Below is the result of extracting one of the textures.

However, editing or extracting textures via this method can be extremely time consuming and difficult for modders who do not know how to use a hex editor. So, in hopes of finding a better way of extracting these textures, I resorted to IDA Pro and Hex-Rays to decompile the games executables in hopes of finding code that might assist me in extracting both the textures and the models. However, IDA quickly ran into trouble.

For some reason, IDA was unable to create any code from the data section, I pulled up the PE Sniffer from PE Tools and to my dismay discovered why IDA was unable to read the section.

The executables code was being protected by Armadilo. Someone over at TT Games was smart enough to add an anti-decompilier so that we couldn't break into their code. I wasn't going to waste time trying circumvent the protection so I decided to continue my search. Fortunately after digging through the forums, I found a tool that would extract the GHG's into separate DDS and OBJ files.

 

In comparison with NinjaRipper, the tool is much faster and easier to use. However, the textures are not applied to the models so anyone hoping to use these files will need to reapply the textures themselves.

Also to my surprise, there are no tools that allow conversion back into GHG. It is my hope that Sluicer creates a tool to convert back or at least releases the source code for the GHG to OBJ software so that someone else may build upon that code to create a OBJ to GHG converter. For now though, I shall remain using NinjaRipper as for it provides a better output than Sluicers tool.

Model Ripping Update: August 12th, 2015

Hello all,

Since my last post four more models have been ripped. Much to my surprise, these models came in many more pieces than I expected. I was also surprised to find the toll that ripping has already taken on my hard drive, despite the low number of characters that have been ripped, my folder where the rips are stored already totals 625 MB. It seems that the number of textures used in the cantina are to blame which each texture costing about 1-4 MB. There is also an issue with the battle droids where some of the parts of their legs are missing. I also need to fix the bartender as for I realized I have the wrong head piece (the current one has a different facial expression). In my next post, I will be discussing and diving into the structure and format of the unusual GHG models that The Complete Saga uses.

Welcome!

Welcome to my new blog! If you haven't read the description of my blog, I will be posting stuff about mods I am working on as well as other things like reverse engineering, LEGO Worlds, etc. Currently, as already shown by my post on the forum, I am working on ripping minifigs from LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga. So far I only have two minifigs ripped and I have a long way to go. My hope for these rips is to eventually use them in LEGO Worlds as a mod (assuming that no Star Wars content is included in the game).

As of 8:41 AM PDT on 8/10/15, the following minifigs have been ripped:

Today, I hope to rip a few more models like Obi-Wan (Padawan). I'll post the results as soon as I have a couple minifigs ripped so that I'm not constantly posting.

Later this week/month, I plan on analyzing the GHG model format in hopes of potentially reverse engineering it (I hope you like C code, I sure don't).
