McJobless' New Computer - Part 1: The Purchase

I'm hoping there will be only 2 parts to this: This one, and then the install where everything works great. Let's not think too hard about the future, though.

Here's what I got:

Total price with handling and postage is about $2800. That's a lot better than what I was originally thinking.

I wanted Windows 8.1 Pro and an EVA GTX 980, but both were out of stock. I also decided that the 4790 was much better value than the 4790K, and the only other ones available were the 5th Gen 8 Core i7s, which were $1000 too much.

I'm a little concerned about the PSU and cooling, but we'll see how everything works out when we get to that part. I might need to buy a heatsink for the CPU.

What are you thoughts, guys? Personally, I'm extremely excited. This is my first hardcore gaming machine ever. I've never had a device capable of running new games at 60FPS. It's about time I caught up with the crowd.

Very nice.

For the PSU, I have an Antec 900w High Current Gamer. Mine is a tad lower spec PC to yours, but I bought it so it'd be good for an update later.

Gainward GFX card? Never heard of it... any reason you chose that brand?

Did you go with a SSHD because of capacity and cost?

Headset, is that strictly for gaming? Because I believe it'll be a bit lackluster on music playback.

How many fans do you have in it?

I was going to go with a 750W, but at the last minute I increased it to the 850W just in case. I believe it'll hold well unless I want to go SLI, but by that time I'll need to replace most of the parts anyway, since the Skylake processors will be out.

Everything else was sold out :P And, doing research, looks like they're not too far behind the ASUS or EVGA OEM cards, and at that price I wasn't complaining.

Actually (this is a bit silly), I have a bit of a morbid curiosity ever since I first saw these Hybrid HDDs. I've got other HDDs and SDDs here, in case things don't work out, but I thought I might as well experiment.

It's for any and all sound work when using the PC (including gaming, music, video editing etc), since this PC won't be in my room and instead in one of the living rooms and people here hate hearing anything which isn't Family Feud (bleh)...

As many as the case has, which I believe has 3/4 fans already. I've talked to a tech I know and he said it should work out fine, but if I suspect things need to be cooler I can easily install another one cheaply.

Supposedly, a 500W PSU is the minimum for a GTX 980: http://www.geforce.c.../specifications

Someone on another forum I use has recently built a new PC too: http://www.rfgenerat...p?topic=14719.0

Interestingly, that guy got a GTX 780TI and only a 500W PSU, which is supposed to be far less energy efficient than the GTX 980.

But yet, even 500W is the minimum, I've still got 350W for the rest of the system, which is more than enough :D If not, I'll get it replaced with a 1000W PSU.

He actually has a 750Ti.
That minimum might actually include an average system's usage.
I've heard that PSUs are most efficient at around half their rated wattage. Going overkill on a PSU isn't necessarily best.

"Windows 8.1" I'm sorry, I thought I was remembering somebody who made fun of me for being an early adopter of Windows 8.

I was forced into it because they sold out of all copies of Windows 7... :P

Heheh... I have a new Win7 Ultimate waiting for me when I build my new PC.
Bought one on eBay. It turned out to be a fake.

Contacted Microsoft. Sent fake to Microsoft at their request.

Received genuine version from Microsoft. Got eBay refund.

:D

yeah.

I'd recommend an 800 to 850w PSU, close to that magic midpoint but not too overboard either.
